There are some who claimthat\u00a0seven\u00a0children,\u00a0and some, such as\u00a0Guillermo D\u00edaz\u00a0Plaja,\u00a0assert\u00a0that they were twenty!(see\u00a0\u201cGoya en sus Cartas y otros escritos\u201d. Heraldo de Arag\u00f3n, Zaragoza, 1980.\u00a0Page 28)Ans\u00f3n\u00a0says\u00a0and\u00a0collect\u00a0eight children, and says that &#8220;all of them (Antonio,\u00a0Eusebio, Vicente, a premature, Mar\u00eda\u00a0del Pilar, Francisco de Paula, Andr\u00e9s and Francisco Javier) died at birth or being very children, except the last, Javier Goya and\u00a0Bayeu, born on December 4th, 1784,\u00a0who\u00a0was the heir of the painter&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, children made with his wife\u00a0Josefa\u00a0(Pepa)\u00a0Bayeu\u00a0Sub\u00edas,\u00a0sister of Francisco, Ramon and fray Manuel.<\/p>\n<p>Equally, Anson says that &#8220;the parents of Goya had\u00a0a house in Zaragoza in\u00a0Morer\u00edaCerrada\u00a0Street, in the parish of San Gil, until 1762.\u00a0Being the house seized for debts, they had to\u00a0move\u00a0to another for rent in the\u00a0Coso, against the so-called\u00a0Rocks of the\u00a0Coso, and years later to another in the street and square of San Miguel&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Goya marries\u00a0Josefa\u00a0Bayeu, in Madrid, July 25th,\u00a01773, in the parish church of\u00a0SanMartin.\u00a0The marriage lives in Zaragoza,\u00a0their\u00a0city, in which\u00a0is born\u00a0their first-born son, male, on August 29th, 1774. The day of his birth will be baptized in the parish of San Miguel de los\u00a0Navarros,\u00a0and \u2018godparented\u2019\u00a0by sculptor Carlos Salas.<\/p>\n<p>The corresponding\u00a0certificate\u00a0of baptism is preserved in the archive of the parish of San Miguel de los\u00a0Navarros, in\u00a0Book 9 of the aforementioned file.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-261\" src=\"https:\/\/realgoya.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/partida.jpg\" alt=\"partida\" width=\"831\" height=\"491\" srcset=\"https:\/\/realgoya.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/partida.jpg 831w, https:\/\/realgoya.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/partida-300x177.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 831px) 100vw, 831px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Whose transcription\u00a0says\u00a0as\u00a0follows:<\/p>\n<p><<Baptized year 1774\n\n(To the left margin: Ant Goya)\n\nIn the parish church of San Miguel de los\u00a0Navarros,\u00a0August,\u00a0Twenty-ninth day of\n\nSeventeen Seventy-Four year: I, Don\u00a0Rafahel\u00a0Royo,\u00a0Regent\u00a0of its\u00a01st\u00a0cure,\u00a0baptized a child who was born the same day, son of Francisco Goya and\u00a0Josefa\u00a0Bayeu, born inZaragoza, legitimately married\u00a0spouses,\u00a0parishioners\u00a0of\u00a0this church\u00a0and,\u00a0to the present,living in this parish. To\u00a0who\u00a0was\u00a0given\u00a0the\u00a0name\u00a0of Antonio, Juan Ram\u00f3n,\u00a0Carlos.\u00a0It was his godfather\u00a0Don Carlos Salas,\u00a0parishioner of San Felipe,\u00a0to\u00a0whom\u00a0I warned\u00a0the spiritualkinship had acquired\u00a0and the obligation to teach the\u00a0Christian\u00a0doctrine of the baptized in the absence of their parents: and\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0Truth I sign it.\n\nDon Mariano Sostre\u00a0y\u00a0Hayeto\u00a0Re>><\/p>\n<p>Down,\u00a0in the same\u00a0sheet\u00a0in which has photocopied the\u00a0certificate\u00a0of baptism, is stamped\u00a0aseal of the parish of San Miguel Q.\u00a0S.\u00a0D. of Zaragoza and over it, the signing of the parish priest, Don Fernando\u00a0Arregui.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Q.\u00a0S.\u00a0D.&#8221; (&#8220;Quis\u00a0Sictvi\u00a0(or\u00a0Sicut) Deus&#8221;) means\u00a0\u00b4Who\u00a0As God?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Looking at\u00a0the document, one can wonder about the figure of the\u00a0godfather, Don Carlos Salas,\u00a0and his undoubted great relationship with the parents of the newborn.<\/p>\n<p>Besides, such closely\u00a0character\u00a0related to Goya is none other than the sculptor Carlos Salas\u00a0Viraseca\u00a0(Barcelona, 1728 &#8211; Zaragoza, March 30th, 1780), with which Francisco de Goya has ample relationship\u00a0after\u00a0coincide both in the work of the\u00a0Pilar\u00a0and, more specifically in their jobs -barely thirty meters from the other- in the posterior part\u00a0of the Holy Chapel of\u00a0mentioned Temple. Goya painted the fresco of the Regina\u00a0Martirum\u00a0and Carlos Salas\u00a0had sculpted\u00a0a work that\u00a0F.\u00a0Abbad\u00a0R\u00edos\u00a0described in &#8220;La\u00a0Seo\u00a0y el Pilar de Zaragoza&#8221; Ed. Plus-Ultra, Madrid, in the following\u00a0way:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-264\" src=\"https:\/\/realgoya.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/retablo.jpg\" alt=\"retablo\" width=\"590\" height=\"787\" srcset=\"https:\/\/realgoya.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/retablo.jpg 590w, https:\/\/realgoya.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/retablo-224x300.jpg 224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 590px) 100vw, 590px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the back (of the Holy Chapel), and\u00a0behind\u00a0the altars, Carlos Salas carved a magnificent high-relief of\u00a0the Assumption of the Virgin. At the top, Maria rises to the sky, sitting on clouds surrounded by angels. And at the bottom, the Apostles, around the empty grave, love her and\u00a0stare at\u00a0the mystery. This\u00a0work\u00a0was such a success\u00a0that was thought to make it the main altar of the basilica and remove\u00a0Forment\u2019s\u00a0altarpiece; but, fortunately, that idea was not carried out. Carlos\u00a0Salas\u00a0(*)\u00a0is\u00a0an understudied\u00a0and,therefore,\u00a0poorly known artist, who worked\u00a0a lot\u00a0in Aragon and Catalonia.
